Happy 2019 (imminently!) from the Prisoners Literature Project – thanks to everyone for supporting us through a busy & productive 2018! The prisoners we serve really appreciate it.
Here’s a couple of thank you letters from prisoners that the Prisoners Literature Project received recently.
Two notable updates regarding an upcoming session and book fair, as follows:
Great news – Pennsylvania has rescinded its restrictions on ‘books to prisoners’ groups thanks to much press & pressure against the measure.
We just wanted to thank two very generous authors for their donations to the Prisoners Literature Project – both of which have significantly helped the organization.
Here’s a great op-ed in the Washington Post about Pennsylvania’s short-sighted ban on non-profits sending (free!) books to prisoners.
Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is still refusing to deliver any of our donated books to their prisoners, & the complaints over this major change in policy are rapidly increasing.
Some major changes have been announced for Pennsylvania’s prison mail system which mean books-to-prisoners organizations may be permanently barred from sending to the state!
The latest sci-fi eBook Storybundle – featuring a bunch of books from Michael Moorcock & Nick Mamatas, among others – is benefiting the Prisoners Literature Project or Books Through Bars as the optional charity.
Prisoners Literature Project is an inclusive, all-volunteer, grassroots nonprofit whose purpose is to encourage reading, the pursuit of knowledge, and self-determination among incarcerated people. By sending free reading materials to those behind bars, PLP aims to foster learning and critical thinking and help prepare people to lead successful lives after incarceration. We believe that all people have a right to read.
Please consider donating to PLP or volunteering your time (if you live in the Bay Area, CA!) to help us answer letters from prisoners who write us from all over the United States.
