Local high school seniors come to PLP to answer letters
For the past several years, PLP has hosted students from Berkeley High School’s Law and Social Justice program. The students come twice a semester to respond to letters from incarcerated readers all over the country. The students select books, fill out address labels and invoices (including personal note to the recipient on the back) for the packages. Kids of this era are not used to handwriting address labels so that takes some explanation 🙂
As part of the curriculum for the Law and Social Justice program the students visit two local prisons: San Quentin Rehabilitation Center and the Chowchilla Women’s prison. They will also ride along with police officers and attend court room proceedings among other learning “field trips”. Prisoner Literature Project is glad to be part of this effort to better inform young people about social justice issues.

We squeezed 11 student into our library last week. They were enthusiastic and would like to come back!

These two students were excited to find the perfect book for the request! The letter writer asked for Italian language learning (Slang) and as happens sometimes we had the book to send!!
Prisoners Literature Project is an inclusive, all-volunteer, grassroots nonprofit whose purpose is to encourage reading, the pursuit of knowledge, and self-determination among incarcerated people. By sending free reading materials to those behind bars, PLP aims to foster learning and critical thinking and help people prepare to lead successful lives after incarceration. We believe that all people have a right to read.
